Save the Love Locks Campaign at Bakewell

Bakewell love locks started to appear on the Weir Bridge in 2012 and were the first to appear in Derbyshire with an estimated 40000 locks attached to the bridge by 2024.

In 2021 the love locks were in danger of being sold as scrap and melted down, a campaign was started to help save them, read on and the story of how we saved them will unravel.

Derbyshire County Council started repair work on the bridge on 16th September 2024 and once completed the bridge will be so designed that no more padlocks can be attached.

All the locks were safely removed on 25th September and are now in safe storage at Thornbridge Hall, awaiting a new structure to be constructed to display them once again.

Bakewell Love Lock Bridge

The love lock bridge in all its glory , showing off the estimated 40000 love locks which were attached to the bridge.

The picture was taken the weekend before their removal.

25th September 2024

The love locks have now all been removed from the bridge after working closely with Derbyshire County Council who allowed us to take possession of them for safe keeping.  All the love locks are now safely stored at Thornbridge Hall. A new structure will be erected in the grounds of the hall.

The locks were removed in order, bay by bay and wire by wire and will be reinstated at Thornbridge in the same order.

However we need help to achieve this, volunteers are required and donations are much needed.
